Land Rover confirms diesel Range Rover, Range Rover Sport for US
The current pair of engines available in the Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are not even remotely worth complaining about. We've heaped praise on the top-end 5.0-liter, supercharged V8 in virtually every vehicle Land Rover (and Jaguar) has fitted it to – it's truly excellent. The newer 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 is a charmer on its own, offering a powerful, but more fuel-efficient version of the Land Rover experience. But anyone that's messed about with Land Rover's European configurators knows we here in the US market are missing out – we want the diesels.
And for 2015, that's just what we're getting, as Land Rover has announced that its 3.0-liter, turbodiesel V6, sold in Europe as the TDV6, will be sold in the US market Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The new engines will elevate the economy figures for the typically thirsty SUVs to an estimated 28 miles per gallon, Land Rover reports.
Now admittedly, the timing for this decision could be better, what with gasoline costs hovering around $2.00 a gallon and diesel averaging well north $3.00. The extra torque and fuel economy of the diesel-powered SUVs should hopefully be enough for customers to see past the increased cost per tank, though. At least it probably will be for us, and we mustn't forget that fuel prices are a fickle thing on which to base long-term automotive buying decisions.
Stay tuned for more on the oil-burning Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in the coming days, as we check out the new engines on the floor of the 2015 North American International Auto Show.
